Tiziano Terzani is a journalist, and he doesn't lose his ability even when he stops doing that as a profession. This book is a chronicle of his last journey, beginning in New York where he's operated and then treated for three cancers. In the next five years he travels around Asia to look for a cure that would make him feel like "one" and not just a body. Part of his journey takes place in India, where he lives for three months in an ashram and where he meets various ayurvedic doctors. He judges Tiziano Terzani is a journalist, and he doesn't lose his ability even when he stops doing that as a profession.
He judges everything from a rational point of view but he understands how many things are beyond reason. His journey finishes at the Himalaya, going through Dharamsala, the residence in India of the Dalai Lama. He is able to speak to everyone using a simple and yet precise language and telling his story, of body and spirit, with honesty. Asia lies close to Terzani's heart. He writes so lovingly about it. Asia is dear to me as well; I lived there, I exlored it. So the things he writes about sound totally familiar to me.
What differs Terzani from other travel writers is that at some point, his trip stops being an excursion into exotic and becomes an exploration of a life itself. Some passages are witty, some are serious or even painful to read, and some are so beautifully written that they make me cry. I felt like I was reading of Asia lies close to Terzani's heart. I felt like I was reading of a visit to my homecountry written by a fellow citizen.
He managed to give a private feeling to such a public and popular space. Jul 11, Matteo dC rated it it was amazing. I guess Italian readers know Terzani very well, hence writing in English because I think this should be part of your library wherever you come from.
It is a very genuine, heartfelt well written book. This is a must-read for sceptic and rational people as well as for spiritual ones. Terzani was not a hippie, he was a war correspondent in Asia, where he lived great part of his life.

Forget about the cover picture, and his guru-like appearance. He was not that. He was much more human and relatable, and so is this book. Oct 25, Teo Sec rated it really liked it. His final book Un altro giro di giostra Another Turn of the Carousel is his account of that experience. I had often said jokingly that my dream was to shut up my journalist's shop, pull down the shutter and hang up a sign saying 'Out for Lunch'.
It was as if the ca in , after persistent health problems, Terzani was told that he had stomach cancer and possibly only months to live. It was as if the cancer was what I had been looking for. After first submitting himself to the technological approach of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, he made the decision to take an alternative path. Terzani set off, once again, on a journey of discovery.
This time he tried Ayurveda, Reiki, meditation, fasting, and prayer. And though he was able to extend the initial prognosis of six months to more than five years, he was unable to find the cure for which he'd been searching. When the Sloan-Kettering clinic told him again that without chemotherapy, there was no hope, Terzani refused treatment. Instead, he went directly to the Himalayas, where he rented a hut, and prepared himself for the inevitable.
A sign at the gate reputedly said: "No Visitors, No Exceptions. Mar 28, Andrea Mad Vacca rated it really liked it. A bit boring at one point, but when I got the last pages I put together all the parts. I like this book. Oct 09, Christopher Intagliata rated it liked it.
Terzani travels around the world in an attempt to cure his cancer. The most fascinating part of the book is probably his wonderful description and dissection of each place he goes to live, including New York City Sloan-Kettering Center and India. He astutely captures the ex-pat's view of his adopted world.

Interesting process what in parts could be seen as a eye opener and in other parts as a philosophic lesson. I could definitely recommend to read this book.
I enjoyed it. Aug 13, Claudia rated it really liked it. The 1st book of Terzani I have read, actually the one that led me to read all others.
A travel through which the Author discovers, perhaps for the first time in his life, that is inner world is bigger and more surprising than the outer world he travelled until he was diagnosed cancer. A must-read. Jul 31, Mariabruna rated it it was amazing. One of the best books ever.
I hope an English translation comes out soon. Mar 11, Katrin rated it really liked it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here.
