Este libro representa un avance muy importante para lograr este objetivo, ya que la terapia ofrece un modelo de tratamiento psicologico muy documentado y de eficacia probada. Fruto de la investigacion y la experiencia practica de Aaron T. Beck y sus colegas, se trata de una obra, tan accesible como exhaustiva, que expone con gran claridad el modelo cognitivo del abuso de sustancias, la especifidad de la formulacion de cada caso, el manejo de la relacion terapeutica y la estructura de las sesiones de terapia.
Tambien debate como educar a los pacientes en los modelos de tratamiento y de que modo controlar sus deseos irrefrenables de consumir drogas y alcohol. Finalmente, describe con gran minuciosidad ciertas estrategias y tecnicas cognitivas y conductuales, como por ejemplo de que forma tratar las crisis agudas y los problemas cronicos de los pacientes. A diferencia de muchos otros trabajos centrados en los aspectos teoricos y epidemiologicos, los autores de este volumen se centran en los procedimientos clinicos, elaborando asi un utilisimo manual que puede utilizarse tanto de manera independiente como conjuntamente con programas psicofarmacologicos o con el programa de tratamiento en doce etapas.
Todos los especialistas en salud mental que trabajen con pacientes con problemas de drogodependencia deberian leer este libro, mas alla de su orientacion o del nivel de experiencia previa tanto con la terapia cognitiva como con el abuso de sustancias.
