Los amorosos: Cartas a Chepita by Jaime Sabines. David 's review Mar 05, Los amorosos Les preocupa el amor. Esperan, no esperan nada, pero esperan. This book is a collection of the letters Jaime wrote to Josefa, or affectionately known as Chepita prior to their marriage. Both were from Tuxtla in Chiapas state but moved to Mexico City.

She studied to become a dentist while he switched from medicine to literature. Through their initial years to , correspondence was through letter writing when either of them was in either Mexico City or in Tuxtla.

It was funny to read these letters. He was madly in love with her. When a letter arrived late, his anger showed through. Now granted he was 21 and one can easily see the eagerness and impatience of his youth.

He would stay up late pining away for her, sometimes ad nauseam. And yet I would read the next letter. The letters were funny, thoughtful and a treat to read. Slowly one could see how his own career was starting out. Things were happening for him. And yet there is news of Chepita. Her exams, her training and one feels like her career was starting as well.

This is remarkable for a woman in the early s. And yet this is all one sided. There are no letters published by Chepita. Sometimes we get the gist of her life but it is all inferred. Still we see how romantic Sabines was, how important he cared as much as her career as his. Family was all important typical to Mexicans.

And a wedding was coming along as well. Letter writing was a serious activity back then. It demanded more than anything else, patience and hope that the letter you wrote would be answered and how long that answer would take, depended on the mail.

One needed a lot of hope. Love preoccupied them. They lived each day and could not live more. They did not know how. They were always going, making something. They waited. They hoped for nothing. Beautiful book, nicely designed and scattered with some wonderful photos of the couple. Definitely a 3. Sign into Goodreads to see if any of your friends have read Los amorosos.
