Once Goddess Durga and her family is immersed in the holy water on Vijaya Dashami, the eastern part of India gears up for Lakshmi Puja. It is also called Sharad Purnima in other parts of India. Kojagari Purnima concerns the observance of the Kojagari 'vrata'. People perform this Vrata in front of the idol under the moonlight after fasting for the entire day. The word Kojagari is derived from the phrase ko jagorti or Who is awake? According to legends, Goddess Lakshmi descends on the Earth on the full moon day of the Ashwin month and is believed to walk around asking 'who is awake?

The festival of Kali Puja is not an ancient one. Kali Puja was practically unknown before the 18th century; however, a late 17th-century devotional text Kalika mangalkavya —by Balram mentions an annual festival dedicated to Kali. She is worshipped at night with Tantric rites and mantras. She is prescribed offerings of red hibiscus flowers, animal blood in a skull, sweets, rice and lentils, fish and meat.
It is prescribed that a worshipper should meditate throughout the night until dawn. She is offered food and sweets made of rice, lentils, and fruits.
The pandal s also house images of Kali's consort Shiva , two famous Bengali Kali devotees named Ramakrishna and Bamakhepa , along with scenes from mythology of Kali and her various forms, including images of the Mahavidyas , sometimes considered as the "ten Kalis.
Kali Puja is also the time for magic shows, theater, and fireworks. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees who give offerings to the goddess. Although the widely popular annual Kali Puja celebration, also known as the Dipanwita Kali Puja , is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Kartika , Kali is also worshipped in other new moon days too.
The Phalaharini Kali Puja is especially important in the life of the saint Ramakrishna and his wife Sarada Devi , since on this day in , Ramakrishna worshipped Sarada Devi as the goddess Shodashi.

The autumn festivity that had started with Durga Pujo, concludes with another much awaited Lakshmi pujo or more precisely Kojagari Lakshmi pujo for Bengali, that falls on Kojagari purnima or sharad purnima as known elsewhere in other parts of India. Fast forward to Seventy years later, this divide has become obsolete now almost and once popularized by East Bengal community, Kojagari Lakshmi puja is well adopted by everyone beyond the borders. Interestingly, this is another time when the cultural attributes of each of the Bengali community is very much on display, while ghoti households worships Ma Lakshmi in form of idol, kojagari lakshmi pujo in bangal household altogether holds a different meaning. Hailing from such family, I had heard stories from my Ma and grandma about elaborate preparations they used to do during Lakshmi puja in Dhaka.
