HINDEMITH CRAFT OF MUSICAL COMPOSITION PDF

Paul Hindemith was a German composer and conductor of great originality. His career began with the study of the violin and the viola, and he held important positions in German ensembles before the Nazi era. Under Hitler's regime, Hindemith experienced difficulties, both artistically and politically. For example, he refused to cease ensemble playing with known Jews. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister, accused Hindemith of cultural Bolshevism, and his music fell into official desuetude. Unwilling to compromise, Hindemith began accepting engagements abroad.

His writing is definitely convoluted, and certainly dated, but he gets his point across. Of special note is of course the method of analysis that he presents.

It's certainly more thorough than the others I've seen. Dec 06, Pablo Neave rated it it was amazing Shelves: music-theory. An incredible text for learning how to write novel, colorful harmony while still sounding consonant and tonally-grounded. There are a lot of very interesting insights and theories here that are gradually introduced as Hindemith constructs his theory of music though it mostly covers harmony axiomatically from first principles.

He starts by deriving the major scale from the overtone series of a single fundamental, and the overtones of THOSE overtones, and then moving on to how he determines specific harmonic intervals to be consonant or dissonant, then his unique system of chord analysis, etc.

My only gripe with the book is that Hindemith will frequently handwave hypothetical critiques of his theory, and atonal or polytonal techniques as "impractical for the purposes of musical composition" or similar phrases to the same effect , when so much of what he criticizes would later be used by composers like Bernard Hermann to very good, and very practical effect. But his dismissal of counterarguments only really serves to preserve the quasi-scientific structure of the text, and in a music theory textbook, it matters less that you accept the author's "all-encompassing" theory of music and more that you glean insights from it that affect your writing or enjoyment in a positive way.
