Web Archive January 29, pm. The CBI charge-sheet, according to Dr Mishra, rubbished the "theory" floated by the Trinamul Congress that the police had resorted to firing at the behest of Mr Bhattacharjee. The firing was the culmination of a series of disruptive activities organised by the sponsors of the agitation who dug up roads and blew up bridges, while a police officer Sadhucharan Chatterjee was killed.
The Maoists also joined the agitation. Of the persons alleged to have been killed in police firing, several had marks of injuries from sharp weapons, according to the charge sheet. Moreover, the charge sheet mentioned that reports of people going missing from the area after the incident and women and children tortured were unfounded, Dr Mishra claimed. A police contingent, sent to oversee the repair of a broken bridge at Bhangaberia appealed over microphone to the mob, which had gathered there, to maintain peace.
But when the men in uniform were attacked, it burst tear gas shells and then opened fire following the order of an executive magistrate accompanying the police team. Incidentally, the executive magistrate who had ordered the firing is now the private secretary of a minister who is close to chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the Leader of the Opposition pointed out. Moreover, the new government did not let the CBI prosecute six police officers in connection with the incident, Dr Mishra said.
These officers are now holding key posts which show they are reliable functionaries of this regime, he said. The Trinamul MP from Tamluk said the CBI charge sheet was a "carbon copy" of the report filed by then officer-in-charge of Nandigram police station which justified the firing.

This story is from January 30, It contradicts the Calcutta high court's order of that called the firing "unconstitutional" in a major embarrassment to the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government. Fourteen villagers were shot dead on March 14, Two days later, the high court said the police firing was "wholly unconstitutional and cannot be justified under any provision of the law" and asked CBI to investigate it.
