From planning permission, to steelworks and tiling, it gives great explanations using a variety of drawings and diagrams with text.
For someone starting out or wanting to improve their knowledge within the construction industry, this book really is a great start. It's a weighty tome but covers everything from Building Regs and Planning through to finishes.
I could be better if it wasn't all in black and white. The illustrations take a little time to decipher because of the monochrome presentation. I would happily pay a little more for a full-colour print! One of my former employers recommended this book to me, as a means of getting the hang of the main construction building methods in the UK in order to be able to complete as an Architect, working drawings and building regulations' packages.
I must say, using it as a foundation and adding specialised manufacturers' documentation and details I found online when needed, was the best and most thorough method to indulge in the uk construction systems and methods, having worked as an architect in Greece up until two years ago. This book is enabling me to create detailed plans and building regulations specifications for my home extension.
I plan to install the foundations myself and this book gives all the information and a huge number of diagrams and examples which help me to understand this. It was recommended to me by a Chartered Surveyor as "the bible" of house-building, and I agree! Got it for my son who is doing an HNC in building construction he seems to very pleased with it He said it was very well recommended by other employees who already done there HNC's.
Just make sure you get the latest addtion. Load more international reviews. I work in an office and use it everyday. This book has everything you could need about construction, right from the start with the plans and elevation, the position of the sun and direction of winds, to the construction methods, contracts, plumbing, heating systems, just everything. I work in an office for a building firm dealing with orders, quotes and plans, this book is always by my side.
It is not just for builders. One person found this helpful. Been buying these books since I was at college, 49 yrs old now and they are still brilliant, I advise all my trainee Engineers QS staff to purchase great simple text for construction. Excellent book will definitely help with my HNC course. I can see it might be helpful for people looking to build extensions etc to there existing property as well. Very informative thgouh Id say its quite broad and shallow and when looking for detailed guidance in areas it does come up short sometimes.
However its no doubt designed as such so still well worth a read. Has absolutely everything you could possibly need to know as a construction management student.
Great book, very informative Swift delivery. For any student of architecture, this is a very practical, informative and well illustrated book to help you understand how buildings work and need to be built. A great compendium of building technicalities! I was lucky to found that book at the early stage of my architectural work in London 15 years ago and still like to check various things there.
