This text was developed over a five-year period during which its authors were teaching the subject. It is the culmination of successful editions of class notes and preliminary texts prepared for their one-semester course at MIT designed for sophomores majoring in physics but taken by students from other departments as well. The content is designed primarily for the use of second or third year students of physics who have had a semester of mechanics and a semester of electricity and magnetism.
The aim throughout is to provide a mathematically unsophisticated treatment of the subject, but one that stresses modern applications of the principles involved. Descriptions of devices that embody such principles-such as seismometers, magnetrons, thermo-nuclear fusion experimental configurations, and lasers-are introduced at appropriate points in the text to illustrate the theoretical concepts.

I, however, found it very instructive and enjoyable. I now understand why. The book is clearly written. The book is filled with worked examples that are interesting and flow from the text. This journey is based on classical physics. The authors, however, are quick to point out the limitations of this approach but defend t he practice based on the reasonableness of the approximation for the scale of domain under consideration and the use of expectation values. The color of the sky, why gold is yellow and silver shiny gray and the frequency dependence of a number of other phenomena as discussed.
One example illustrated the tissue penetration of microwave energy into biological tissues. These were all delightful examples. I am certain that I am completely ignorant of a number of limitations of this book. I also cannot hope to have deep insights into the necessity of quantum mechanics for the nanoscale understanding.
However, the clarity and well organized nature of this 40 year old book has certainly diminished my ignorance in a constructive manner. MITonline offers the course based on this book for free. The course is great! This book is a less engaging, but a more comprehensive version of A. French's original text for the course. There are many gems in the book, such as insights into microwave oven fundamentals, that are not present in basic texts. Beware the softcover binding, it needs a gentle hand.
This is a truly excellent book. If covered all, I would say MIT sophomore is extremely well trained for such a foundation MIT's freshman physics and math classes are on the average not the best on international level, though perhaps the best within US.
I am teaching physics at college, and this book contains foundations and applications well blended and thoroughly covered. The book's choice of application topics is admittedly on electromagnetics, so a bit "outdated". However, this does not diminish the book's overall quality. I didn't like it much for self study. At least not as a standalone. The book is very complete, with everything you need to know from the subject, but I could use more explanations, examples and exercises.
I used it to study with Walter Lewin's course from ocw, which was really helpful, but many times i had to get back at past subjects or search the internet for clarifications. There probably are better books if you want to study by yourself. This is a excellent text for undergraduates in physics or EE to understand the fundamental electromagnetic properties of vibrations, waves and radiation. It supplements Purcell's very well. Having studied it, you are equipped with solid understanding and can go on into Optics.
