Given the rapidly increasing prevalence of multiresistant Gram-negative pathogens, there is an urgent need for new agents that retain antimicrobial activity. Researchers have now assessed the activity of cefiderocol versus other antibiotics with broad-spectrum Gram-negative coverage: aztreonam, amikacin, cefepime, ceftazidime, ceftazidime—avibactam, ceftolozane—tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, meropenem, colistin, and tigecycline. All were tested against a panel of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens with characterized antibiotic-resistance mechanisms isolated from patients worldwide between and Carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa were susceptible to cefiderocol and colistin only. Similarly, for carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter baumannii, only cefiderocol, colistin, and tigecyclin retained activity. Cefiderocol showed excellent antimicrobial activity against various multiresistant pathogens for which treatment options have been scarce.
